The course sessions are writing-intensive and rigorous – participants are expected to participate in class discussion as well as prepare writing assignments between sessions.

Course sessions are designed around the different sections of a traditional scientific article but also include discussions on grammar essentials, writing style and overall successful scientific communication.

All courses include a workbook for in-class exercises and the book Reader-Friendly Scientific Articles as a reference. The book also includes online exercises.

Our courses are interactive and we encourage scientists who have already published to share their experience with other participants.

Courses are easily tailored to suit the specific needs of your institute, company or department.

The following is an example of a 4 session course we offer:

Day 1:

  • identifying a readable writing style for science
  • how to structure a scientific article
  • how to write effective titles
  • working toward organized, easy-to-read Abstracts
  • identifying the basic elements of a successful Introduction

Day 2:

  • a critiquing session of participants’ Abstracts
  • overview of important grammar essentials for scientific writing
  • an introduction to the Discussion section
  • editing a badly written text
  • how to make a good scientific poster

Day 3

  • thorough, small-group critiquing of participants’ Introductions
  • further work on the Discussion section
  • some tips for a successful conclusion

Day 4

This day is dedicated to 30-minute individual sessions between each participant and the trainer. These meetings are a means of providing feedback on any writing which was presented during the course as well as general questions and discussions of writing a scientific article.
